Photonic Crystals: Investigations and Applications in Optical
Abstract of the Speech
Photonic crystals, which are the structured materials attracted much attention of researcher due to their unique properties as well as for their potential applications in many optical and optoelectronic devices, which are not offered by the bulk materials. In these engineered structures, refractive index is periodically modulated on the length scale comparable to operating wavelength of electromagnetic spectrum. This periodic modulation in refractive index significantly modifies spectral properties of electromagnetic spectrum and resulted in the presence of allowed and forbidden photonic bands, which is analogous to the electronic band structure of periodically modulated potential. Thus, propagation characteristics like reflection range, band structure, group velocity, spontaneous etc. can be controlled effectively by changing the spatial distribution of refractive index. This control on propagation characteristics resulted in numerous applications such as optical filters, perfect lens, omnidirectional reflectors, sensors, optical computing, optical switches, DWDM demultiplexer etc. In this present talk, the speaker will discuss about the investigations and advancements of these artificial materials with main emphasis on the applications of these structures in optical communications.
Dr. Arun Kumar has interdisciplinary experience across various fields of science and engineering. His area of research and teaching varied from hard core Physics like Photonics, Electromagnetics, Microwave Engineering to the Optical Communication, Optogenetics, Lasers, etc. He received Doctorate degree in Physics from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, UP, India in 2012. His Doctorate Research, includes reserach on the simulation and modeling of Photonic Crystals. Earlier to doctorate work, he received Master of Technolohy in Laser Science and Applications in 2002 from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, MP, India. He was the recipient of CSIR-UGC India research fellowship. In addition to above qualifications, He had also qualified various competitive examination of all India level such as UGC-CSIR-NET, GATE, etc. in Physics. He has more than 12 years of experience in teaching of graduate and post graduate courses in Engineering/Applied Science discipline. Since June 2006, he has been working as an Asst. Prof. at Amity Institute of Telecom Engineering and Management, Amity University, UP, India. Earlier to Amity University, he has also worked as a Lecturer in Banasthali University (Women University), Rajasthan for 3 years. He was also having the position of Hony. Secretary, IETE subcentre, Amity University, Noida, India, from July, 2012 to June, 2014. In succession of his hard work and dedication, in July 2014, his position was elevated to the Vice-Chairman of IETE subcentre. Currently, he is providing technical guidance to IETE subcentre and continuing as Vice-Chairman. Presently, he is actively involved in the research and development activities related to photonic crystals and optical communication. He has published more than 40 research papers in Journals/Conferences of International repute. Also, he is a reviewer of International Journals such as IEEE, Elsevier, Chinese Optics Letters, etc. Dr. Kumar is a member of various professional bodies such as IEEE, Fellow of IETE, India and Life member of Indian Laser Association.
His Biography was published in Marquis Who’s Who in the world (USA) 2014, 2015, 2016, and in Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering (USA) 2016-17.
